Spotify Ads Manager: a practical guide

The self-serve platform is straightforward to use and easy to use badly. The difference is in a handful of decisions most people rush.

What Spotify Ads Manager is

Spotify Ads Manager is Spotify's self-serve advertising platform. You build campaigns, set budgets and targeting, upload creative and read reporting in one place, reaching an audience Spotify puts at more than 675 million monthly active users in its own platform documentation, and which its most recent quarterly results put at 777 million.

It replaced and absorbed what many people still call Ad Studio, and it has gained significant capability since Spotify's 2025 platform overhaul, including an app installs objective, an enhanced Spotify Pixel and third party measurement integrations.

The four objectives

Campaign objectives in Spotify Ads Manager.
ObjectiveWhat it optimises forCreative implication
Brand awarenessReach and impression deliveryMemorability over instruction. A single idea, said clearly, repeated enough to stick
Engagement on SpotifyActions within the Spotify appThe call to action needs to be something achievable without leaving the app
Web trafficClicks through to your siteThe companion image is doing much of the work. Give a specific reason to visit
App installsInstalls of your mobile appName the app clearly and early. Listeners will not remember a URL they heard once

Targeting, and how much to use

Available levers include age, gender, location and language, music genre, contextual playlists, podcast episode topics, interests, and frequency capping.

A useful rule: one contextual signal per ad set, not four. If you want to know whether genre targeting or playlist context works better for you, they need to be in separate ad sets. Stacked together they become a single narrow audience that tells you nothing about either.

Set the frequency cap deliberately. Audio fatigue is real and arrives faster than display fatigue, because a repeated ad in an audio stream is far more intrusive than a repeated banner.

The Spotify Pixel and measurement

The Spotify Pixel lets you record on-site actions and attribute them back to campaign exposure. Since the 2025 platform update it can be created and reported on directly within Ads Manager, and Spotify has added Brand Lift as a native solution alongside third party measurement integrations with DoubleVerify, Integral Ad Science, AppsFlyer and Kochava.

Install it before your first campaign, not after. Retro-fitting measurement means your first flight, the one you will judge the channel on, is the one with the worst data.

Five settings people get wrong

  1. One campaign carrying everything. Separate the funnel stages or you will never know which part worked.
  2. Default frequency. Leaving it uncapped concentrates spend on heavy listeners and caps your reach without telling you.
  3. A single creative. You get a result and no explanation. Three distinct scripts is the practical minimum.
  4. Over-stacked targeting. Narrow audiences raise costs and slow learning at the same time.
  5. No pixel. Without it, everything downstream of the impression is guesswork.

Platform figures and specifications quoted across this site come from Spotify Advertising and Spotify's published quarterly results. They change, so treat them as a starting point and check the current documentation before you plan a budget.

Common questions

Is Spotify Ads Manager the same as Ad Studio?

Ads Manager is the current name and platform for Spotify's self-serve advertising. Ad Studio is the older name that many people still use, and Spotify's own documentation occasionally still references it.

What objectives can I choose in Spotify Ads Manager?

Brand awareness, engagement on Spotify, web traffic and app installs.

Does Spotify have a conversion pixel?

Yes. The Spotify Pixel records on-site actions and attributes them to campaign exposure, and can be created and reported on within Ads Manager.

Can I manage Spotify campaigns myself?

Yes, the platform is designed for it. The practical question is whether anyone on your team has the hours each week to optimise properly and the ability to produce new creative on a rolling basis. Those two things, more than platform knowledge, are what decide whether self-managed campaigns work.
